A Step-by-step Guide through your cataract surgery

Our Friendly StaffWhen you enter the surgery center, you will be greeted by our friendly staff. They will check you in and prepare you for surgery. We have a comfortable waiting room for you before your surgery begins and for the person who may wait while you have surgery. Our main objective is to make you feel comfortable and at ease.

Once your admission is completed, you will be taken into the holding area where a nurse will start an IV. You will be introduced to our anesthesia provider who will administer light sedation and prepare you for surgery. Your surgeon will give you an eye block if he deems it necessary.

Next, you will enter the surgery suite. One of our experienced ophthalmologists will remove your cataract by one of several methods including phacoemulsification (a process where the lens is liquefied with an ultrasonic devise, then drawn out by suction). After the cataract is removed, your ophthalmologist will replace the clouded lens with a permanent intraocular lens to improve your vision.

After surgery, you will be taken to the dismissal lounge where a nurse will explain any after surgery procedures you may need to follow and will answer any questions you might have. Follow up appointments will be made and you will be dismissed, since recovery will be completed in the comfort of your own home.

Occasionally the lens capsule, which is left in the eye, will cloud over. This condition, known as an after-cataract, can be corrected quickly and painlessly with laser surgery. The YAG laser is used to form a window in the center of the remaining capsule, restoring clear vision. Our Surgery Center is equipped with both a YAG laser for after-cataracts, and an Argon Laser for patients with retinal disorders.

What is a cataract?

Anatomy of the eye

A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. It can be compared to a window that is frosted or "fogged" with steam. Cataracts are the number one cause of poor vision among adults, affecting two thirds of Americans over sixty. The most common type of cataract is related to the aging of the eye. Other causes include diseases such as diabetes, injury to the eye, and certain medications.

What are the symptoms?

Cloudy Vision, a Symptom of Cataracts

Symptoms of a cataract include a gradual dimming or blurring of your vision, difficulty reading, glare, or light sensitivity, frequent eyeglass prescription changes, poor night vision and a fading or yellowing of colors.

What type of
treatment is needed?

The only effective treatment for cataracts is to surgically remove the lens. During the procedure the physician removes the cataract and replaces it with a permanent intraocular lens implant to restore your vision. Our physicians use advanced surgical techniques, with state of the art equipment. Our highly trained anesthesia team will make your surgery safe and painless. Hospitalization is no longer required and in a matter of a few hours you are resting in the comfort of your own home.
